Coal Production by Region, 1994-2003. This line graph shows coal production for the three regions and total U.S. for the years 1994 through 2003. Total U.S. coal production in 1994 was 1.034 billion short tons and in 2003 was 1.0695 billion short tons. Appalachian Region coal production in 1994 was 445.4 million short tons and in 2003 was 375.0 million short tons. Interior Region coal production in 1994 was 179.9 million short tons and in 2003 was 146.2 million short tons. Western Region coal production in 1994 was 408.3 million short tons and in 2003 was 547.3 million short tons.
