Coal Production by Coal-Producing Region, 2003. This map of the United States shows coal production in 2003 for the three coal-producing regions and the percentage change in production from 2002. Appalachian Region coal production in 2003 was 375.0 million short tons, a decrease of 5.4 percent from 2002. Interior Region coal production was 146.2 million short tons in 2003, down by 0.3 percent. Western Region coal production in 2003 was 547.3 million short tons, a decrease of 0.6 percent.
