Community Involvement and Student Education
Community Involvement and Student Education
In order to make the nature and purpose of our work clear to a broad public, we take community involvement and education very seriously. We maintain a large number of outreach activities, for example conducting workshops, hosting organizations, teaching courses and taking "touch tanks" to area elementary schools.
We also exchange specimens with the Seattle Aquarium, give science presentations designed to encourage research-based learning in high schools, and create and deliver training as part of a University of Alaska program for Alaska natives.
The Center is an active participant in GROWS (Genetic Research on Washington Salmon) - a cooperative effort to help high school teachers and university researchers bring genetics and conservation issues into the classroom.

Collaboration with Tribal Colleges and Universities
The Center is proud of the relationships it has developed with Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) through the American Indian Higher Education Consortium.
The Center shares with Native American Tribes similar goals and responsibilities with respect to marine stewardship.
As a part of the Department of Commerce, the Center has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Northwest Indian College and the TCUs to create the Nationl Indian Center for Marine and Environmental Research and Education (NICMERE). The goal is to integrate scientific collaboration between the TCUs and NOAA and at the same time to increase educational opportunities in fisheries science for Native Americans.
