Our Goal:
To help natural resource professionals create more opportunities for involvement, and recognize and identify ways to allow for greater access to programs.

The Need:
From State and Federal agencies to nonprofit organizations, the desire to get more people involved in urban forestry and other forestry programs has increased. Although these efforts have noble objectives, they repeatedly fail in their attempts to obtain broader and more diverse citizen participation. Natural resource professionals commonly perceive that the lack of participation in programs and activities by diverse audiences is because of lack of interest; however, our experiences have found that the reason is related to access and opportunity.

Our Approach:
These workshops use a non-threatening approach to explain why outreach is important and critical to program effectiveness. The agenda includes an overview and background on the value of diversity and time for questions and answers, followed by training on the Dialogue on Diversity outreach model—how it works and how to use it. The day will end with an interactive session that allows individual participants to develop an outreach strategy for a particular need that they wish to address.
