Transit Research |
Based on transportation trends, DOT and FTA strategic goals, and
industry input, FTA organized the Research and Technology Program
around the following areas:
Collectively, programs in these areas will improve customer
service, increase the cost-effectiveness of transit assets, and
contribute to improved environmental quality while building the
professional capacity of the industry and increasing transit ridership.

FTA has accelerated the deployment and testing of the
PROTECT
system for chemical detection in subway systems. Research funds were refocused to conduct
short-term, quick payoff research projects. TRB's new report, "Deterrence,
Protection, and Preparation," recommends 'layered security
systems' that are integrated throughout transportation
operations. |
