USAID has played a leadership role in promoting and consolidating democracy worldwide.

A democratic foundation fosters individual opportunity for prosperity and improved well-being, and USAID believes that long-term domestic and foreign policy objectives of the United States are best served when the community of democratic nations worldwide broadens.

Democracy and Governance efforts in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) countries can be seen in nearly all programs. Efforts to open up governments, eliminate corruption, increase participation of people, modernize the justice sectors and provide trade and job opportunities are embodied in all USAID programs in LAC countries.
