Eritrea
The US Agency for International
Development (USAID) allocated almost $1.5 million to HIV/AIDS
activities in Eritrea in FY 2001, an increase from $500,000
in FY 2000. Although the countrys HIV/AIDS prevalence
is still relatively low compared with many other countries
in the region, the risk of an epidemic is considered high
due to the large number of Eritrean troops aged 18-41 to
be demobilized from the border conflict with Ethiopia. In
addition, more than 1 million Eritreans were displaced by
the military offensive launched in May 2000. Given this
high-risk situation and early recognition of the threat
by the Government of Eritrea, USAID/Eritrea is rapidly expanding
support from condom social marketing to other aspects of
HIV/AIDS prevention and care.
