East Africa
Disaster Declared: 10/10/2003
Brief Description: In May 1998, Ethiopia and Eritrea
began a border conflict that continued until June 2000. The
conflict and drought conditions during the past three years,
particularly in the Anseba, Debub, Gash-Barka, Northern Red
Sea, and Southern Red Sea zones, affected more than 2 million
people. The failure of the winter harvest in eastern regions
during 2000 created additional external food assistance needs.
The USG has provided more than $126 million to assist conflict-
and drought-affected populations in Eritrea since 1993.
