WASHINGTON, DC -- As part of the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID) continuing humanitarian efforts in Sudan's western province of Darfur, five airlifts will arrive in Nyala and El Fasher between June 19, 2004 and June 28, 2004. These airlifts will include 60,000 blankets and 1,260 rolls of plastic sheeting, which is sufficient to provide shelter for 79,380 beneficiaries. These shipments, including transportation costs, are worth $1,065,500. The most recent airlifts are in addition to the $1,941,150 in relief supplies that arrived in Nyala between June 5, 2004 and June 14, 2004, for a total airlifted contribution of $3,006,650 to Darfur.

Three of the five commodity flights arrived in Nyala on June 19, 21 and 23. The commodities on the latest airlift dispatched by USAID will bring the total contribution of airlifted relief items for Darfur to 7,020 rolls of plastic sheeting, 117,500 blankets, two water sanitation systems, and 600 water containers.

In a matter of weeks, the rains will likely render many roads impassable for the delivery of humanitarian assistance, making USAID and other non-governmental organizations' work more difficult. USAID analysis of potential mortality rates in Darfur suggests that 300,000 or more people will likely perish by the end of this year.

The Jingaweit Arab militias that have destroyed crops, burned villages and mosques, and raped and killed many Darfurians have been making incursions into neighboring Chad, attacking the internal displaced concentration camps. Even though violence continues, the United States government has actively participated in improving the situation in Darfur. In fiscal year 2004, USAID contributed $50,574,724 in humanitarian assistance to western Sudan. During the recent Sudan donor conference in Geneva, Switzerland, USAID Administrator Andrew S. Natsios announced that the U.S. government was pledging an additional $188.5 million for Darfur through the end of 2005. This amount will bring the total U.S. contribution for Darfur since February 2003 to nearly $300 million.
