Scholarships

The U.S. Agency for International Development [USAID] does not provide individual scholarships.

USAID provides economic and humanitarian assistance around the world. We do this by administering the official United States Government bilateral assistance program. Each USAID-funded activity must meet a specific USAID strategic objective. This web site, and the individual USAID office in the country where we provide assistance, can provide you with more details about USAID programs. In some instances, specific USAID activities may include some training in order to achieve a specific goal or objective. This may or may not be the case in your home country. However, please remember: USAID does not provide scholarships directly to individuals.

We understand that you may have been referred to the USAID website by another organization. That organization included USAID in a listing of possible sources of individual scholarship assistance. This information is incorrect and causes a great deal of confusion and misunderstanding. We apologize.

The following is a list of Internet resources regarding financial assistance or scholarships.

  • U.S. State Department, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA)

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) fosters mutual understanding between the United States and other countries through international educational and training programs. The bureau does so by promoting personal, professional, and institutional ties between private citizens and organizations in the United States and abroad, as well as by presenting U.S. history, society, art and culture in all of its diversity to overseas audiences.

  • The National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation is an independent U.S. government agency responsible for promoting science and engineering through programs that invest over $3.3 billion per year in almost 20,000 research and education projects in science and engineering.

This program awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at universities renowned for their development research and teaching.

  • National Security Education Program (NSEP), Academy for Educational Development

The National Security Education Program Graduate International Fellowships enable U.S. graduate students to pursue specialization in language study or to add an important international dimension to their education. NSEP Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions which are critical to U.S. national security, but which are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students, i.e., areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

  • The U.S. Department of Education

The U.S. Department of Education's mission is to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence for all Americans. The Department administers several major student aid programs, including Pell Grants and Stafford Loans, which provide over $42 billion a year to help millions of students pay for the costs of college.
