The US Attorney's Office promotes community based crime and drug prevention programs throughout the district.  The Office has adopted a number of strategies to combat the threat of gun violence in our communities, beginning with a commitment to aggressive enforcement of federal firearm laws.  In cooperation with state and local law enforcement, the office established Triggerlock II to vigorously prosecute firearms offenders in federal court and to work with the community to heighten awareness of the violence associated with firearms.  Through Project Exile and Total Mission, the office is working closely with the communities in Oakland and the Mission District of San Francisco to prevent gun violence.  Operation Safe Home is a joint initiative with HUD to reduce crime and violence in public housing through interagency cooperative efforts.

Through the leadership of the Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee (LECC) Coordinator, the district has worked with the community to develop six Weed and Seed sites whose goal is to prevent, control and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in targeted high-crime neighborhoods.  Weed and Seed sites are located in Salinas, Oakland, San Francisco, Contra Costa County, and San Jose.  Each year this district sponsors approximately 200 boys and girls from the Weed and Seed sites at the Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) residential camp in San Luis Obispo, California.
