The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California and the United States Marshal Service announced that Barrie Taylor was arrested on November 20, 2003 for extradition to France on the charge of murder. Ms. Taylor, 47, was arrested by U.S. Marshals when she returned to her home in Capitola on Thursday. The warrant, which was ordered unsealed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth D. Laporte this morning when Ms. Taylor appeared in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, called for Ms. Taylor's arrest for the alleged murder of Roxanne Pavegeau in Versailles, France on September 28, 1993.
The complaint states that Ms. Taylor was questioned by Versailles police at her house on September 30, 1993 concerning the disappearance of Roxanne Pavageau, when police discovered a freshly-excavated hole in the yard behind Ms. Taylor's house. Further investigation revealed the bound body of the victim on the nearby cellar stairs. Forensic examination revealed the presence of 20 wounds to the victim's skull, multiple skull fractures and multiple brain lesions.
Ms. Taylor was arrested by French authorities on October 2, 1993 and charged with murder. She was released on bail on May 20, 1998, and fled to the United States. A complaint simply contains allegations against an individual and, as with all defendants, Ms. Taylor must be presumed innocent unless and until convicted. Judge Laporte continued the case to Tuesday November 25, 2003 for identification of counsel and bail hearing.
