The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California announced today that Jacqueen Gandy was sentenced today to 51 months in prison for conspiracy and for possessing 13,000 pills of ecstasy with the intent to distribute them. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston following Ms. Gandy's guilty plea to both counts.
Ms. Gandy, 39, of Thomasville, North Carolina, was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 29, 2003. She was charged with conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute ecstasy.
Judge Illston sentenced Ms. Gandy to 51 months in federal prison as well as a three year period of supervised release. The defendant has been in custody since her arrest on January 17, 2003. Ms. Gandy will begin serving her sentence immediately.
A criminal complaint filed shortly after Ms. Gandy was arrested showed that she and a codefendant, Randen Kane, took delivery of two packages of ecstasy that had been shipped from Germany. Customs inspectors discovered the ecstasy before the package was delivered. Customs agents then kept the shipping address in San Francisco under surveillance in order to discover who picked up the packages. The charges against Ms. Kane are still pending.
The prosecution was the result of an investigation by agents of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the Department of Homeland Security. Mark Parrent is the Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted the case with the assistance of Ji-Yon Yi.
