The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California announced today that Joseph L. Lupton was sentenced on May 2, 2003 to one year and one day in prison on his conviction for accepting bribes as an employee of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.  The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge D. Lowell Jensen following defendant Lupton's guilty plea to a one count Information charging him with bribery in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 201.

Mr. Lupton, age 59 and a resident of Livermore was a purchasing agent employed by the University of California in connection with the operation of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).  In his capacity as a purchasing agent, he would order specially made parts and equipment needed by the LLNL scientists and engineers.  As part of his plea agreement in the case, Lupton admitted that he received bribes from a business supplying such made-to-order items to the LLNL.  In all, Lupton admitted that received bribes totaling between $15,000 to $20,000 in cash and other valuable items including gold coins and a gun chest.

In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Jensen sentenced Mr. Lupton to three years of supervised release and ordered that he pay restitution of $12,500 and a fine of $3000.

The prosecution was the result of a joint investigation conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of the Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Burch prosecuted the case with the assistance of Karen Bishop and Noble Hughes.
