WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a donation of $57 million in humanitarian assistance for the men, women and children affected by the Darfur crisis in the country of Sudan. The funding and supplies augment resources for life-saving medical care, shelter, food aid and emergency coordination and logistics. Total U.S. assistance for the Darfur humanitarian crisis now stands at more than $302 million.

"USAID humanitarian experts are in Sudan, working every day to help move aid into critical areas to assist the people of Darfur and Darfurian refugees in Chad," Administrator Natsios said. "In this complex humanitarian crisis, it is critical to alleviate food shortages and assure that men, women and children are getting the food, medical assistance and sanitation programs they need to survive."

On October 1, USAID's Office of Food for Peace donated food valued at nearly $44 million to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) for two emergency food aid operations in Sudan and Chad. This total includes $30 million for WFP distribution in Darfur, and $13.7 million for WFP distribution supporting Darfurian refugees in Chad. Combined, the emergency food aid - more than 50,000 metric tons - allows for mass shipments of sorghum, corn soy blend, lentils, cornmeal, vegetable oil and green split peas. One metric ton is equivalent to 2,200 pounds.

From September 23-30, USAID's Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance contributed a total of $13.6 million to support humanitarian programs in Darfur, including:

  • $3.2 million to International Medical Corps;
  • $2.5 million to Cooperative Housing Foundation International;
  • $2 million to Save the Children-U.S.;
  • $2 million to the U.N. Children's Fund;
  • $500,000 to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs; and
  • $500,000 to the WFP/Joint Logistics Center.

The U.S. is the largest contributor to the U.N. World Food Program and to date has provided more than 186,000 metric tons of food aid for Darfur, valued at more than $170 million. For more information on USAID's ongoing efforts in Darfur, please visit our Web site at www.usaid.gov.
