WHAT: The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation will join with USAID and its other partners to announce a nearly $41 million public-private undertaking to provide potable water and sanitation facilities to hundreds of thousands of people in rural Ghana, Mali and Niger. The Hilton Foundation has committed $18 million over seven years; World Vision, $16 million; USAID $4.4 million, with the other partners providing the balance, bringing the total to $40.7 million. The announcement is being made on the eve of the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg where access to clean water has been identified as one of the major issues to be discussed.
WHO: Speakers:
Steven M. Hilton, President, Conrad Hilton Foundation
Andrew Natsios, Administrator, USAID
Bruce Wilkinson, World Vision Senior Vice President, International
WHY: The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that nearly 1.2 billion people (20% of the world's population) lack access to clean drinking water, and that twice that number, 2.4 billion, lack access to adequate sanitation services. There are about 250 million cases of water-related diseases annually and more than five million deaths annually from unsafe drinking water and unclean domestic environments (WHO).

Note: Representatives of most of the partners will be available for questions
