WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) chartered Liberty Star, carrying 36,000 metric tons of emergency food commodities, including corn, cornsoya milk and cornmeal, is due to arrive in Durban, South Africa, early next week. Valued at approximately $16 million, the Liberty Star's delivery will feed up to 2.4 million people for a month.
Having delivered more than 96,000 metric tons of food aid, valued at more than $50 million, since the beginning of 2002, the United States government is the largest donor to the World Food Program's operations in southern Africa and has contributed the majority of food aid to the region. The United States' total food aid deliveries to southern Africa to date, including the Liberty Star shipment, is more than 132,000 metric tons, valued at more than $68 million. The United States will continue to ship more food in the coming months to address the urgent and growing humanitarian needs, with an additional 160,000 metric tons already committed to the region, 75,000 metric tons of which are due to arrive in early September.
