Mr.
Schiff: About 10-years ago there was a rash of invasions at homes of dope dealers
in Detroit, Michigan. To help the police department, the Safe Streets-Violent
Crimes Task Force was created...
Mr.
Vandervliet: "It was composed of the FBI, DPD, the Detroit Police Department
and the Michigan State Police."
Mr.
Schiff: That's FBI Special Agent Marty Vandervliet says the subjects were violent
in going after money and drugs...
Mr.
Vandervliet: "Kicking their doors in, acting like police, and robbing them.
In some cases they were also beating and shooting the victims as well as some
sexual assaults."
Mr.
Schiff: Vandervliet says the gang wore masks and bulletproof vests...
Mr.
Vandervliet: "They would be armed with semiautomatic guns such as Uzi's,
Mach 10's, and they would also typically wear police raid jackets."
Mr.
Schiff: After some violent incidents, 20 subjects were arrested. All were convicted
and sentenced to lengthy prison terms. By the way, the FBI has joint task forces
at just about all of its 56 field offices. I'm Neal Schiff and that's the FBI's
Closed Case of the Week."
