Mission

The Leadership and Management Science Unit's (LSMU) mission is to enhance effective, practical, and creative leadership and management practices, as well as a spirit of cooperation among the FBI, municipal, county, state, and international law enforcement leaders. We do this through the design and administration of programs and developmental experiences that foster growth and lifelong learning. We serve as a model of leadership and management skills, and establish excellence and integrity as the measures of our success.

Programs for "Local" (Non Federal) Agencies

There are two primary programs created for municipal, county, state, and international executives. One is the National Executive Institute (NEI) for executives of major jurisdictions. The other is the Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS) for heads of mid-sized and smaller agencies. These programs are designed to develop leaders who have great influence on those charged with maintaining order in a democracy.

Staff

The LSMU carries out its mission in a variety of ways. Its nine-member instructional staff, all with advanced degrees, is accredited by the University of Virginia to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the FBI National Academy. These same instructors and support staff have responsibilities for management and executive development programs, such as the Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS) and the National Executive Institute (NEI) as well as numerous programs for FBI employees.

The richness of the diverse training programs provides our instructors with opportunities to acquire a wide breadth of new knowledge from students and guest speakers, which is then shared with others.

One federal prosecuting attorney (Assistant United States Attorney) who visited the Academy for the first time said, "This place is like the temple where leaders of law enforcement come to receive their mission -- don't ever lose the magic." This overstatement is appreciated, but it does convey that something special happens in the Academy's unique environment. The members of the LMSU staff are ever mindful of the opportunity to serve others.
