FORMER FEDEX GROUND EMPLOYEE SENTENCED FOR STEALING FIREARMS Kevin J. OConnor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that JASON RODRIGUEZ, age 18, of 4 Bailey Street, Apt. B2, New Haven, Connecticut, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Janet B. Arterton in New Haven to six months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, on his conviction for stealing firearms that were traveling as part of interstate shipments. As a condition of his supervised release, RODRIGUEZ must spend the first six months on home confinement with electronic monitoring. He was also ordered to participate in mental heath treatment and to make restitution in the amount of $1,589.08. According to documents filed in court and comments made at todays hearing, between February 2004 and March 17, 2004, Rodriguez was employed as a package handler at FedEx Ground located in Wallingford, Connecticut. During that time, he stole three firearms from FedEx Ground packages and sold them to an associate. Two of the guns have been recovered and the third remains at large. When he pleaded guilty to the charge in April 2004, RODRIGUEZ admitted that he and his co-defendants, Jonathan Garcia and Aneudy Davila, returned to work and stole an additional two rifles. After being questioned by law enforcement, RODRIGUEZ instructed another person to throw the rifles into a river. Garcia and Davila have also pleaded guilty and are currently scheduled to be sentenced on September 29 and October 18, respectively. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony E. Kaplan. The case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the New Haven Police Department. | |
