EAST WINDSOR MAN SENTENCED FOR THEFT OF GOVERNMENT PROPERTY

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that NORTON RYAN, age 60, of 185 Windsorville Road, East Windsor, Connecticut, was sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Ellen Bree Burns in New Haven to three years of probation as a result of his conviction for theft of government property. Judge Burns also ordered RYAN to pay to the Government restitution in the amount of $2500.

According to documents filed with the Court, beginning in November 1990 through May 2001, approximately, RYAN received Social Security Supplemental Security Income benefits, on a monthly schedule, on the basis of periodic written representations as to his income and assets. Supplemental Security Income is a needs-based income maintenance program for the disabled and aged whose income and resources are less than a federally mandated dollar amount. In his July 30, 2002 guilty plea to the charge of theft of government property, RYAN acknowledged that in the year 2000, he received income that was not reported in his December 2000 mandated filing of a Statement for Determining Continued Eligibility for Supplemental Security Income Payments.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Deborah R. Slater.
