BRIDGEPORT MAN ADMITS HIS ROLE IN BURGLARY OF BRIDGEPORT POLICE FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ANGEL MALDONADO, age 25, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, pleaded guilty today in Bridgeport federal court to conspiracy to commit the burglary of the Bridgeport Police Department Credit Union in August 2002. Previously, on August 16, 2004, Maritza Zapata, who at the time of the burglary was a customer service representative at the credit union, also pleaded guilty to her involvement in the conspiracy.

In court proceedings today before United States Magistrate Judge Holly B. Fitzsimmons, MALDONADO admitted that he received from Zapata a key to the building, the alarm codes and the combination to the credit union's vault. MALDONADO then burglarized the credit union, stealing approximately $67,800. MALDONADO and Zapata were arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bridgeport Police in January 2004.

When he is sentenced by Senior United States District Judge Peter C. Dorsey on November 12, 2004, MALDONADO faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bridgeport Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kari A. Dooley.
