CHESHIRE MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO TAX FRAUD Kevin J. O'Connor, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that ALBERT J. GRASSON II, age 49, of 67 Fernwood Lane, Cheshire, Connecticut, has pleaded guilty to filing a false income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service. United States Magistrate Judge Donna F. Martinez accepted GRASSON's plea of guilty on Thursday, August 5, in Hartford federal court. According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, in April 2002, GRASSON filed his federal income tax return for the calendar year 2001 on which he showed a negative taxable income of $15,689. GRASSON admitted, however, that he failed to report $18,684 in earnings from his business, Surgical Instrument Services, a surgical instrument repair service. He also omitted from that same tax return additional rental income of $30,550. As part of his agreement with the Government, GRASSON has agreed to pay the IRS $40,302 in additional federal taxes plus penalties and interest. When he is sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Robert N. Chatigny on November 1, 2004, GRASSON faces a maximum term of imprisonment of three years and a fine of up to $250,000. This case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Calvin B. Kurimai. | |
