Project Safe Neighborhoods: EAST HAVEN MAN RECEIVES 100 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ILLEGAL GUN POSSESSION

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that ANTHONY GREGO, age 38, formerly of 30 Burr Street, East Haven, Connecticut, was sentenced to 100 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. United States District Judge Janet C. Hall sentenced GREGO on Friday, July 9, 2004, in Bridgeport federal court.

On June 9, 2003, GREGO was arrested by the East Haven Police Department in connection with the theft of two firearms from his parents' residence in East Haven. GREGO subsequently exchanged the firearms for drugs. Before he possessed the guns, GREGO had been convicted of sale of narcotics, which is a felony. It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm that moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

GREGO pleaded guilty to a one-count Information on March 24, 2004.

In imposing the sentence, Judge Hall stated that GREGO would serve an effective sentence of 110 months, noting that before appearing in federal court to plead guilty, he had served approximately 10 months in state custody, for which he would not receive any credit against his federal sentence.

This matter was investigated by the East Haven Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John A. Marrella.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents in Connecticut's cities. Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
