HARTFORD MAN SENTENCED TO 27 MONTHS FOR PASSING COUNTERFEIT CHECKS

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ANTONIO JOHNSON, age 26, of Hartford, Connecticut, was sentenced to 27 months imprisonment for passing counterfeit checks. In a hearing before United States District Judge Janet B. Arterton in New Haven, JOHNSON was also given a three year term of supervised release to begin upon his discharge from prison and ordered to make restitution in the amount of $39,149. This sentence is to run consecutively to a five year sentence he is currently serving in state court.

On November 15, 2003, JOHNSON pleaded guilty to two counts of passing counterfeit checks, admitting that in August and October 1998, he passed counterfeit business account checks in the amounts of $349 and $487, respectively, at Stop & Shop Supermarkets in New Haven and Willimantic. He further acknowledged passing a total of 62 counterfeit checks between 1998 and 2002, totaling $41,575.

The case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and United States Secret Service and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney James G. Genco.
