NIANTIC POSTMASTER INDICTED FOR THEFT OF POSTAL FUNDS AND FALSIFYING RECORDS

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that DONNA SULLIVAN, age 45, of 279 Brayman Hollow Road, Pomfret Center, Connecticut, has been indicted on two counts of misappropriation of postal funds and two counts of making false entries in records. A federal grand jury sitting in Hartford returned the Indictment on March 30, 2004. SULLIVAN entered a plea of not guilty to the four counts when she was presented before United States Magistrate Judge Thomas P. Smith this afternoon in Hartford. SULLIVAN was released from custody after posting a non-surety bond of $25,000.

According to the Indictment, SULLIVAN is alleged to have misappropriated in excess of $1000 of money and property belonging to the United States Postal Service while employed as a Postmaster at the Niantic, Connecticut Post Office. The Indictment also alleges that SULLIVAN made false entries in records of audits.

U.S. Attorney O'Connor stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case is being investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dave Vatti.
