NEW YORK HEROIN TRAFFICKER SENTENCED TO 5 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that RUBEN MELO, age 41, formerly of 9221 220th Street, Queens, New York, was sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Peter C. Dorsey in New Haven to 60 months imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release. On January 5, 2004, MELO pleaded guilty possession with intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin. MELO is subject to deportation to the Dominican Republic following his release from prison.

U.S. Attorney O'Connor explained that MELO was arrested in Fairfield, Connecticut, on September 17, 2003, after members of the Bridgeport Violent Crimes Safe Streets Task Force and the Statewide Narcotics Task Force executed a search and seizure warrant. MELO has been incarcerated since his arrest.

This matter was investigated by the Bridgeport Violent Crimes Safe Streets Task Force and the Statewide Narcotics Task Force. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney James K. Filan, Jr.
