WALLINGFORD MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO MAIL FRAUD

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that DAVID C. HALLOWELL, age 46, of 43 South Street, Wallingford, Connecticut, pleaded guilty today in Hartford before U.S. District Judge Christopher F. Droney to a single count of mail fraud.

HALLOWELL's guilty plea arises from conduct in which he engaged while employed by Boise Cascade Corporation, a supplier of office supplies and electronic products. As was revealed in court proceedings, in early 1999 through January 2001, HALLOWELL, who was employed by Boise Cascade as a purchasing specialist at its distribution center located in Naugatuck, Connecticut, ordered approximately 30-40 digital cameras on Boise Cascade's account, subsequently sold the cameras over the internet through online auction sites and retained the proceeds for his own benefit. HALLOWELL received payment from the purchasers and shipped the cameras to them through the U.S. mail. As a result of HALLOWELL'S conduct, Boise Cascade lost approximately $35,000.00.

HALLOWELL faces a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a maximum fine of $250,000 when he is sentenced by Judge Droney on June 11, 2004.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Postal Inspection Service and is being prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney Ronald Apter and Assistant United States Attorney Dave Vatti.
