MONA KIM SENTENCED TO 80 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that MONA KIM, age 39, an associate of Martin Frankel, was sentenced today in New Haven to 80 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for her role in a $200 million fraud against several insurance companies. On January 30, 2003, KIM was convicted by a jury on seven counts, including participating in a racketeering enterprise, racketeering conspiracy, money laundering and wire fraud. Senior United States District Judge Ellen B. Burns sentenced KIM to concurrent sentences of 80 months on the racketeering and money laundering convictions and 60 months on the wire fraud convictions.

In sentencing KIM to an effective sentence of 80 months, Judge Burns departed from the sentencing guidelines of 151 to 188 months, concluding that KIM's "limited time" of involvement in the fraud scheme warranted a lesser sentence. Judge Burns also ordered KIM to pay restitution in the amount of $50,075,000, at a rate of $200 per month.

KIM and Frankel fled from Greenwich, Connecticut, to Italy in 1999 following the collapse of Frankel's massive fraud scheme. During the January 2003 trial, several dozen witnesses and hundreds of exhibits chronicled the Frankel fraud enterprise and KIM's role as an office manager and in assisting Frankel flee the country to escape insurance regulators and law enforcement.

Martin Frankel has been detained since his arrest and awaits sentencing.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, who were assisted by members of the Greenwich Police Department. The Frankel related cases are being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Mark G. Califano, Jeffrey A. Meyer, and Kari A. Dooley.
