NEW HAVEN "CRACK" DEALER SENTENCED TO MORE THAN 10 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced today that HERIBERTO BATIZ, also known as "Luis Rene Garay," age 38, formerly of 55 Weybossett Street, New Haven, Connecticut, was sentenced on March 10, 2004, by Senior United States District Judge Alfred V. Covello in Hartford federal court, to 128 months imprisonment. BATIZ pleaded guilty on February 6, 2003, to violating federal narcotics laws.

BATIZ and his co-defendant girlfriend, Blanca Cupid Candelario, also known as "Paulina Cupid Candelario, age 39, also formerly of 55 Weybossett Street, New Haven, were arrested on October 9, 2002, after they made several deliveries of "crack" cocaine and powder cocaine to a cooperating witness. At the time of their arrests, agents seized in excess of 325 grams of crack and approximately 750 grams of cocaine from their Weybossett Street residence.

On July 7, 2003, Candelario was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment after Judge Covello departed from her sentencing guidelines range.

This case was investigated by the New Haven office of the Drug Enforcement Administration and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark D. Rubino.
