HARTFORD CRACK DEALER GETS NINE YEAR SENTENCE

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that KELVIN COLEMAN, age 20, formerly of 141 Greenfield Street, Hartford, Connecticut, was sentenced today to 108 months imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release for his conviction on federal drug charges. The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford. COLEMAN pleaded guilty on August 5, 2003.

COLEMAN was one of ten people videotaped in February and March 2002 by the Hartford Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation regularly selling crack cocaine on Edgewood Street in Hartford. The investigation was an offshoot of an investigation into the May 16, 2001, drive-by murder of Gil Torres on Farmington Avenue, near Hartford Public High School and the Mark Twain House.

U.S. Attorney O'Connor praised the efforts of Special Agents of the FBI and members of the Hartford Police Department for their investigation that ultimately led to this and related convictions.

"Investigating and prosecuting a case like this takes real cooperation between all levels of law enforcement," U.S. Attorney O'Connor stated. "We are pleased that this cooperation has led to very real results, as several drug dealers have now been removed from the streets of Hartford for a long period of time."

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Leonard C. Boyle and Michael J. Gustafson.
