Project Safe Neighborhoods: NEW HAVEN MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO ILLEGAL GUN POSSESSION

Kevin J. O'Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that NATHAN JOHNSON, age 22, formerly of 63 Stevens Street, New Haven, Connecticut, pleaded guilty today to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. United States District Judge Stefan R. Underhill accepted JOHNSON'S plea of guilty in Bridgeport.

In September 2003, a federal grand jury indicted JOHNSON for violating the federal law that makes it illegal for a person who has previously been convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm. JOHNSON was arrested by the New Haven Police Department on August 27, 2003, following the discovery of a nine-millimeter semiautomatic pistol in his bedroom at his Stevens Street residence. Police officers were at JOHNSON'S residence to execute a search warrant. According to the indictment, JOHNSON had twice been convicted in Connecticut Superior Court of Sale of Narcotics, which is a felony offense.

JOHNSON faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on April 9, 2004.
"In light of a recent increase in gun-related crime in New Haven, the United States Attorney's Office, through the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, remains steadfast in its committment to vigorously enforcing the gun laws and removing dangerous felons from the community," U.S. Attorney O'Connor stated.

This case was investigated by the New Haven Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John Marrella.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents in Connecticut's cities. Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
