The Forensic Science Training Unit provides training services and support through the following programs:

  • New Agent Program—Provides instruction to new FBI and DEA Agents on the recognition, development, preservation, and collection of crime scene evidence, with emphasis on photography and fingerprinting.

  • National Academy—Provides instruction for the forensic science component of the National Academy, an intensive 11-week law enforcement-management training program for national and international students.

  • Specialized Training Program—Provides training to federal, state, and local forensic laboratory and law enforcement personnel. More than 35 courses covering topics such as arson, bombing, chemistry and instrumental analysis, computer forensics, crime scene, DNA, documents, fingerprints, firearms identification, footwear identification, microscopy, photography, and quality assurance are offered. Many of these courses are accredited through the University of Virginia School of Continuing Education.

  • Distance Learning Team—Designs and develops multimedia courseware to support training efforts within the FBI. These interactive training materials are avaliable to personnel of the following: the FBI; other federal agencies; and international, state, and local law enforcement and forensic laboratory personnel. Internet access is not required because the interactive training material is also available using a CD-ROM.

  • University Education Program—Provides financial support for Laboratory personnel to earn advanced academic degrees and/or certifications.

  • New Professional Core Curriculum Training—Coordinates and teaches a mandatory series of classes to the Laboratory's new examiners, technicians, engineers, and scientists. The goal of the curriculum is to ensure all new professionals receive uniform, basic skills and knowledge training on topics including safety, ethics, evidence handling, public speaking, and testimony proficiency.
