FBI Phoenix has two Evidence Response Teams (ERT) comprised of Special Agents and Professional Support employees in Phoenix and Tucson. Each member of the ERT receives specialized training in the areas of crime scene management and investigation, and in the area of evidence collection and processing. The ERT is charged with conducting thorough crime scene investigations, performing specialized searches, and serving as liaison between FBI Phoenix and the FBI's Laboratory. When an FBI case requires a complex crime scene search or the use of a specialized forensic technique, members of the ERT are immediately deployed. In addition to FBI cases, the ERT at times will assist local law enforcement agencies in processing local crime scenes upon request.

The following are some of the specialized techniques employed by the ERT:

  • Crime scene reconstruction
  • Bloodstain pattern analysis

  • Post-blast/bombing crime scene evidence recovery
  • Latent fingerprint detection and collection
  • Cyanacilic fuming for latent prints
  • Trace evidence vacuum processing
  • Hair and fiber evidence detection and collection

  • DNA evidence recovery
  • Ground metal detection and ground-penetrating radar
