Richard James Peters, a convicted felon, is wanted for murder in New Mexico. On March 25, 2000, Peters allegedly shot Dennis Lukes of Albuquerque in the head and dumped his body on a dirt road near an irrigation canal in southwest Albuquerque. Peters eluded law enforcement authorities at his residence in Albuquerque the night of the homicide and is known to have traveled to Arizona, Colorado, California, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico since that time. Peters was charged with murder in a state arrest warrant which was issued on March 28, 2000, by the Metropolitan Court, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. On August 24, 2000, a federal arrest warrant was issued by the United States District Court of New Mexico, charging Peters with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. On November 22, 2003, law enforcement authorities reportedly encountered Peters in a remote area of the Zuni Mountains near Grants, New Mexico. Peters hurriedly abandoned his campsite and managed to escape. He allegedly left behind an arsenal of weapons, but is still believed to be armed and very dangerous. There was a sighting of Peters in Ramah, New Mexico since that time. He may be traveling in a dark blue Toyota pickup with a matching dark blue camper, an American Flag sticker on the front bumper, and possibly New Mexico license plates which read 143 NM7. The FBI is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of Richard James Peters. ADDITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHS
