WEATHER AND THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT: MEETING THE NEEDS OF URBAN COMMUNITIES
More than $11 billion dollars, and thousands of deaths, can be attributed to hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other severe weather each year. As a result, there has been increasing national and international attention focused on the need to address urban weather and climate issues. NOAA's work in urban meteorology has helped reveal how weather and climate interact with the natural, built and societal features of urban environments. This work has also provided insight as to how to manage cities and respond to natural and human induced hazards.

IN THE DEEP END OF A SWIMMING POOL OR THE DEPTHS OF EARTH’S OCEANS, REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLES PROVIDE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND NOAA

Yet it too faces human pressures including agricultural pollution, introduced species and hydrological alterations. The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve strives to conserve, enhance and restore this rare and
threatened estuarine ecosystem.
