WEATHER
AND THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT: MEETING THE NEEDS OF URBAN COMMUNITIES
More than $11 billion dollars, and thousands of deaths,
can be attributed to hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other
severe weather each year. As a result, there has been increasing
national and international attention focused on the need to
address urban weather and climate issues. NOAA's work in urban
meteorology has helped reveal how weather and climate interact
with the natural, built and societal features of urban environments.
This work has also provided insight as to how to manage cities
and respond to natural and human induced hazards.

THE DEEP END OF A SWIMMING POOL OR THE DEPTHS OF EARTH’S
OCEANS, REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLES PROVIDE CHALLENGES AND
OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND NOAA
Thirty-four teams of students from across
the United States and Canada designed, built and piloted their
own remotely operated vehicles during the NOAA-supported third
Annual National Student ROV Competition, held earlier this
summer in Santa Barbara, Calif. During the competition, the
students faced challenges similar to those typically encountered
by researchers using ROVs on NOAA ships. For students and
NOAA employees alike, overcoming those problems provided real
lessons in teamwork and technology, and in life.

CELEBRATING
50 YEARS OF ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH IN BOULDER —
Fifty years ago this month, President Dwight D. Eisenhower
stood at a podium in Boulder, Colo., to dedicate a building
that was to serve as the new home for researchers studying
radio waves and their propagation in the atmosphere. This
marked the beginning of a proud history of atmospheric exploration
and discovery that would change the way humans view the Earth
and its atmosphere forever.

ELKHORN
SLOUGH NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE —
Estuaries are rare on the rugged Pacific
coast of the United States, and those that have remained untouched
by urban development are even rarer. Elkhorn Slough, in the
Monterey Bay area, is one exception. Yet it too faces human
pressures including agricultural pollution, introduced species
and hydrological alterations. The Elkhorn Slough National
Estuarine Research Reserve strives to conserve, enhance and
restore this rare and
threatened estuarine ecosystem.
