SOUTHWEST REGIONAL ADMINISTRATOR Director Penny Dalton announced today that Dr. Rebecca Lent has been appointed Southwest region administrator of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, effective July 30. Lent moves to the regional administrator's position from the agency's Highly Migratory Species Management Division, which she has directed since 1997. "Rebecca Lent has ably managed a very controversial division here at headquarters, and she's ready to take on additional responsibilities in the Southwest region," said Dalton. "Rebecca's experience in dealing with a wide variety of controversial fishery management issues affecting fishermen, conservationists, business and communities is excellent preparation for her new assignment." Lent served as the highly migratory species division's economist from 1992-97, and prior to that was an associate professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Universite' Laval in Canada. She holds a doctorate degree in Resource Economics from Oregon State University and a masters degree in Economics from San Diego State University. Her graduate research focused on Pacific salmon and the California swordfish fishery. "I'm looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that await in the Southwest region," said Lent. "Deputy regional administrator Rod McInnis and the rest of the Southwest region staff have done great work to protect and conserve marine resources. I hope to continue their excellent efforts, applying the knowledge and experience I've gained in the highly migratory species management division." The National
