FBI Director Louis J. Freeh met today with Mr. Ward Elcock, Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), Mr. Paul Kennedy, Senior Assistant Deputy Solicitor General of Canada, and Deputy Commissioner Giulano Zaccardilli of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The meeting, requested last week by the Canadian officials, is one in a series of ongoing discussions between Department of Justice, FBI, and Canadian authorities designed to ensure continuing close coordination on law enforcement and intelligence issues.

While no specific development prompted today's meeting, these continuing high level discussions reflect the importance both countries place on seemless law enforcement and intelligence efforts relating to Y2K and terrorism issues and are consistent with the long and productive relationships that exist between United States and Canadian law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Today's meeting also provided a personal opportunity for Director Freeh to express his great appreciation for the superb efforts of CSIS and RCMP in furtherance of ongoing terrorism and Y2K investigations.
