Message
from Director Mueller: Why a new FBI?
After the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, it
was clear the FBI needed to change from an agency primarily
focused on bringing criminals to justice to one whose primary
focus is the prevention of future attacks. This new approach
required new leadership, a new organizational structure,
new priorities, new technologies, and a new FBI mindset.
Making these changes in a short period of time has not
been easy. But the extraordinary men and women of the FBI
have shown great strength, flexibility, and enthusiasm.

Today's FBI is not defined by boxes on an organizational chart,
but by new ways of doing business-greater collaboration
with our partners in law enforcement, less bureaucratic
red tape, and more accountability at every level. At
the same time, we have held onto the standards of excellence
that have made the FBI the preeminent law enforcement
agency worldwide.
Today's FBI is better positioned to prevent future attacks, to protect
America's critical infrastructure, and to hunt down criminals who prey
on our citizens. We are still changing, and our new flexibility will
ensure that the FBI stays on top of current and future threats well into
the 21st century.
-Robert
S. Mueller, III
