About the Program: Overview
The Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program (EGRP) manages a comprehensive program of grant-supported, population-based research that brings to bear the expertise of scientists to increase our understanding of cancer etiology and prevention. Scientists from throughout the United States and internationally are supported. The Program supports research on the determinants of cancer, including:
Other equally important areas of research include:
The Program closely monitors scientific advances in these areas in order to identify gaps and opportunities to foster new, cutting-edge research, and to be able to provide the necessary research resources to support a comprehensive research program. Workshops and other activities are sponsored to synthesize findings from analytic, etiologic studies of modifiable risk factors for cancer, in order to help set priorities for individual and community-based interventions and public health policy. Also, the Program provides information, consultation, and advice to individual scientists and institutions about National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, science policies and procedures, preparation of grant applications, and on funding instruments.
