The Naval Surface Warfare Center
Dahlgren Division was established on October 16, 1918 as the United States
Navy's chief proving ground for large-caliber guns. Since that beginning,
NSWCDD has established a tradition of science and technological excellence
in research, development, testing and evaluation of weapon systems for the
armed forces of America as well as products that bettered the American way
of life. Among such products that NSWCDD helped research, design, develop,
test are the 16-inch battleship gun, the famed World War II Norden
bombsight, and the forerunner of the modern computer. Today, NSWCDD is at
the forefront of naval science and engineering in the fields of computer
defense technology, ship and personnel defense, special weapons and
warhead development, chemical and biological agent defense, counterdrug
technology, theater ballistic missile defense, as well as exploring other
expanding technology to aid our nation's defense.
