It wasn't
until the painting "La Boite à Chapeau Polychrome"
was formally reappraised this past December that the crime
came to light. Someone had switched a forgery for this extraordinary
painting by artist Fernand Léger (1881-1955), a major
figure in the development of cubism and proponent of "machine
art."
Now reported
by the Lake County, Illinois, Sheriff's Office as stolen,
information is sought that might lead to recovery of the painting.
This large canvas measures 73 x 92 cm (or approximately 29
x 36 inches).
