Welcome to the SEC Space Weather Operations Home Page

Space Weather Operations (SWO) is a division of the Space Environment Center (SEC) providing the Nation's official source of space weather alerts and warnings. SWO is a team of Space Weather Forecasters and Operations Specialists operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, continually monitoring and forecasting Earth's space environment.

The SWO center consists of two primary workstations, one for the duty forecaster and one for the duty operational specialist. Additional workstations are located within the center allowing others to perform duties away from the operational consoles. Each workstation controls a bank of displays showing current solar, geomagnetic, particle, and radio data. The center also offers a large window giving the touring public a view of the daily operations.

Forecaster duties include:

• Performing a synthesis of current data, climatological statistics, and relevant research results to formulate their predictions of solar and geophysical activity.

• Provide forecasts and services to the scientific and user communities as one of the Regional Warning Centers with the International Space Environment Service (ISES), and performing a special role as “World Warning Agency,” acting as a hub for data exchange and forecasts.

Typical Operations Specialists duties include:

• Ensuring data integrity and timeliness;
• Verifying event validity an issuing Alerts, Watches, and Warnings
• Updating announcements on the Geophysical Alert Broadcasts over radio station WWV, and WWVH.
