Introduction
Short-term warnings and forecasts of geophysical activity are some of the services provided by
Space Environment Center's Space Weather Operations (SWO). Effective use of these warnings and forecasts
requires knowledge of their capability and limitations. Verification statistics and other quality information
for these products can be found through these web pages.
The majority of the forecasts on SWO’s primary daily forecast product–the
Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical
Activity (SDF)–are
covered, as well as SWO’s geomagnetic K 5 and K 6 short-term warnings.
Also found here are a glossary of verification terms, including formulae for the various
metrics, and a verification bibliography that includes links to several PDF files of specific papers.
Future web page enhancements will add verification results for other
routine SWO forecasts and warnings as well as quality information on
new
products as they become available. Updates to the verification results
are planned
at least annually; however, new charts, analyses, and other supplemental
resources may be added at any time.
Information on each product is accessed through its own web page which
is reached from the side navigation bar. Statistics lists and graphs
for each product are displayed in their own “borderless” pop-up window that can be closed
by clicking the “Close Window” button on the plot page or the close button on the navigation
bar of the browser. The product verification page will remain on the desktop.
