Cooperative Forestry

Forests can produce greater benefits if they are protected and managed to accomplish their owner's goals, while still providing surrounding

Our Forest Management Program works with State and private landowners and foresters in ways that best serve our resources. This encompasses both urban and rural areas.

Managed rural forests provide habitat for wildlife, an aesthetically pleasing landscape feature, and high-grade raw material for timber products. Landowners who steward their forests obtain a source of income while ensuring a sustainable supply of goods and services that communities demand to support existing standards of living.

Managed urban forests coexist with dense human populations. They provide similar benefits as rural forests, which include enhancing the quality of life for citizens by providing aesthetically attractive green space and habitat for wildlife. Urban forests and community trees can also help reduce energy consumption.

Forests in both rural and urban environments serve as vital filters for water. Managed rural and urban forests protect the clean water that is necessary for human consumption and prized as a recreational resource by a large portion of the population.
