FBI Sends Computer Crime Survey to 700 Businesses

Charles Mathews III, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Oregon, announces a new initiative to identify the scope and depth of computer crime in this state. The FBI's Computer Crime Squad in Portland has sent more than 700 "computer crime surveys" to a wide cross-section of businesses, academic institutions and public facilities. The survey is designed to identify the scope of computer crime in Oregon and to assist law enforcement in creating a successful plan to deal with that crime.

The 12-question survey can be filled out anonymously, and the individual responses will be kept confidential. Broad participation is vital to the success of the project in that investigators want to make sure they get the most accurate picture as to the nature and extent of the problems Oregonians face.

Enclosed with the survey, participants will also find information on where to report cyber crime, computer intrusions, intellectual property theft and Internet fraud.

During the past year, the FBI in Oregon established a stand-alone Computer Crimes Squad to deal with the ever-growing problem of high tech crimes. In addition to the new local efforts, the FBI has a number of long-term programs designed to address these crimes, including:

  • InfraGard Program: This is a partnership between private industry and the government to encourage the exchange of information as both try to identify potential threats to the nation's physical and cyber infrastructure.

  • Innocent Images: This is a program designed to identify, investigate and prosecute sexual predators who use the Internet and online services to sexually exploit children.

  • Internet Fraud Complaint Center: The IFCC's mission is to provide victims of Internet fraud a convenient and easy-to-use reporting mechanism that alerts law enforcement of a suspected criminal or civil violation.

  • Intellectual Property Rights Center: The IRP is a coordination center for the collection, analysis and dissemination of intelligence involving copyright and trademark infringement, signal theft and theft of trade secrets.

The results of the survey will be posted on the Oregon InfraGard web site, www.oregoninfragard.org, when completed in late summer.

A copy of the survey is attached. Those businesses that did not receive a survey but who would like one can call (503) 552-5214.
