CHARGES FILED IN SATURDAY BANK ROBBERY

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Terry G. Hillard, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) announced today the arrest of GLENN J. DUNKEL, age 47, who has no permanent address. DUNKEL was arrested Saturday morning by CPD officers responding to a robbery alarm at the Park National Bank and Trust, which is located at 2958 North Milwaukee Avenue.

DUNKEL was charged in a criminal complaint filed earlier today in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, DUNKEL entered the Park National Bank shortly after it opened, approached a teller and orally demanded money. Although he claimed to be armed, no weapon was displayed and no injuries were reported. After obtaining an undetermined amount of cash, DUNKEL fled the bank on foot. He was pursued by a bank security guard, who followed him for six blocks into a convenience store. DUNKEL was then taken into custody by the CPD, who subsequently turned him over to the FBI.

DUNKEL was held over the weekend at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Chicago for violation of his supervised release from federal prison, just three months ago. He was convicted and served approximately five years for the 1998 robbery of another Chicago area bank.

DUNKEL appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ian H. Levin, earlier today, at which time he was ordered held without bond pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charges filed against him, DUNKEL faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in custody

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against DUNKEL is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
