Jeffrey
A. Lampinski, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
Philadelphia Division, announced the recovery of the painting, "Young
Goatherds" which was stolen from the Maryfield House, Frankscroft,
Peebles, Scotland during a burglary on August 18, 2003. Maryfield House
is an historic mansion.
"Young Goatherds," painted by Edward Atkinson Hornel (Scottish
1864-1933), was recovered in Philadelphia after the FBI received information
from Interpol regarding the theft. In early September, Scottish authorities
found numerous paintings and antiques in a vehicle in Musselburgh, Scotland.
Many of the items were determined to be stolen from Maryfield House. The
owner of the vehicle was subsequently arrested and charged with theft
in Scotland. The painting had been transported to the United States and
consigned to a New York auction house. It is valued up to $50,000.
Once in the United States, the painting was purchased from the auction
house by a dealer in New York. The auction house and dealer were unaware
that the painting was stolen. The dealer then attempted to sell the painting
at a Philadelphia auction house where it was recovered by the FBI.It will
be returned to the Maryfield House in Scotland.
Special Agent in Charge Lampinski praised the auction houses and dealer
for their timely cooperation in this matter. As a result of their work,
no money was exchanged through the sales. The recovery was a result of
the cooperation between the Philadelphia division Art Theft Task Force
and Interpol, London.
