I can't find a publication on a specific topic. Where else can I look?

Try our search feature. Additionally, you may want to access the Government Printing Office's sales site.

How does the Search feature work?

We use a search engine provided by FirstGov.gov. It's extremely easy to use; basically, you just type some information about the general topic you're interested in.

All you have to do is enter your topic in the text box next to "Find these key words:", then click on the "Search" button. That's it!

For more help on performing queries with this search engine, see www.firstgov.gov/index.shtml.

Why aren't all publications available in HTML?

In order to reach the greatest number of people, and trying to keep things as simple and generic as possible, we originally provided all our publications in straight ASCII text format. This has the added benefit of keeping the download times quick (for those of you with slow modem connections).

We're now taking the next step: making the publications look more like the "real thing." To do this, we are converting the text-only publications to HTML format and, in some instances, PDF format. By publishing the documents in these formats, we hope to give you a sense of what the original documents look like. Plus, we get to include graphics -- pictures, tables, charts, etc. -- that we can't in the text versions.

How do I download the text of a publication?

Open the publication in your favorite browser. Most browsers allow you to save the current document by simply going under the File menu and then selecting "Save As".

Most browsers also let you save the document without actually opening it. However, you must link to the document displayed somewhere on the page. In Netscape, you can right-click while the mouse is positioned on the link, and then select "Save Link As". You should be prompted for the name and location on your computer where you want to save the document. If you are using Internet Explorer, the process is the same. The only difference is that instead of "Save Link As", you would select "Save Target As".

Please note that you should be looking at the text-only versions of the publications, not the HTML version. You can get to the text-only version of our site at www.pueblo.gsa.gov/textver/t_main.htm.

Which browser works best on this site?

While we don't endorse any particular browser, we do encourage you to regularly upgrade whichever one you use. We try to make our site as universal as possible so we aren't forced to write code specific to each browser.

Generally, if your browser supports HTML 3.2 and higher you should have no problems with our site. Earlier versions may not properly display elements as they're intended (graphics may not be aligned on a page, there may be borders around the graphics, or everything is blended together, making the page unreadable).

Some people have experienced difficulties on our shopping site using older versions of the Prodigy browser. We can only suggest contacting Prodigy and seeing if you can get an update to their browser.

Can I distribute the information in your Catalog?

The publications distributed through the Federal Consumer Information Center are published or sponsored by a variety of Federal and private-sector organizations. In most instances, FCIC is not the publisher and cannot provide legal advice pertaining to the legality of the sale or further use of the information. While most of the information is in the public domain and can be copied and used for educational purposes, we can't provide a blanket assurance that all of the information is in that category. If you are planning to copy and distribute this information, especially for profit, it would be prudent to contact the publishing agency for permission and consult a lawyer.

Please feel free to link to the FCIC web site, should that course of action satisfy your needs.
