Frequently Asked Questions about Consumer Help

How can I get help with a consumer problem?

The Federal Citizen Information Center does not handle consumer complaints. We provide information through the publications that are listed in our Catalog and on our web site.

The Consumer Action Handbook, published by FCIC, lists federal, state, and local government offices with consumer related responsibilities. The Handbook also includes Better Business Bureaus, consumer contacts with corporations and trade associations, and tells how to write an effective complaint letter. You can view the Handbook online, order it via our internet ordering system, or by writing to:
Handbook
Pueblo, CO 81009

Another valuable resource is your local library. The reference section is likely to have materials to help answer your questions, and the librarian has been trained to assist you in finding the information you need on any subject.

If you have questions about Federal programs, benefits, or services, you can call the FCIC's National Contact Center at (800) 688-9889, Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 8:00 pm eastern time. Users of text telephones (TDD/TTY) can also call toll-free by dialing (800) 326-2996.

Where can I file a complaint?

We have a great complaint resource page. This page has a compiled list of resources that handle consumer complaints. The sources are arranged alphabetically, by topic.

Our Consumer Action Handbook also has some helpful hints on how to complain. It not only tells you how to complain, but also the steps in filing the complaint and even more resources.

How can I find out about product recalls?

We have two great pages on our site. The first page is our list of the latest recalls. We update this page at least once a week to get the information to you faster. The second page is our recall resources page. We compiled a list of sites that announce product recalls. So, if you are looking for a specific recall and didn't find it mentioned on our site, click here and check these sites.

How can I find information on scams and frauds?

This page has some of the latest Scams, Frauds, and Consumer Abuse items in the news.

We also have a Scams Resources page. This page lists sites that report on scams/frauds being committed against consumers. Some of these sites have toll-free hotlines for reporting scams/frauds and consumer abuse.

Do you have the Consumer Price Index?

Although it sounds like we should, the Federal Consumer Information Center does not have information on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). You can find information on the Consumer Price Index on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Web site: www.bls.gov/cpi/.
